How Is a Body Prepared for Cremation?
When arranging a cremation, many families naturally have questions about what happens behind the scenes. One of the most common is: how is a body prepared for cremation?
At Black Country Funeral Services, we believe in being open, transparent and respectful in everything we do. Understanding the process can provide reassurance and peace of mind during a difficult time.
The Care of Your Loved One
From the moment your loved one comes into our care, they are treated with dignity and respect at all times.
They are transported carefully to our premises and placed in a private, secure environment. Our trained and experienced team follows strict professional guidelines to ensure the highest standards of care.
Identification and Documentation
Before cremation can take place, strict legal procedures must be followed.
This includes:
- Verification of identity
- Completion of all required medical and legal documentation
- Authorisation from the appropriate authorities
These checks ensure the cremation is carried out correctly and respectfully.
Preparation and Personal Care
The preparation process for cremation is carried out with sensitivity and professionalism.
This may include:
- Gentle washing and hygienic preparation
- Dressing in clothing chosen by the family, or a simple gown
- Hair styling or light grooming if requested
If the family wishes to spend time with their loved one beforehand, we can also arrange viewing in our chapel of rest.
Removal of Medical Devices
For safety reasons, certain medical devices must be removed prior to cremation. For example, pacemakers are carefully removed because they can pose a risk during the cremation process.
This is handled discreetly and respectfully by our trained staff.
Placement into the Coffin
Your loved one is then placed into the coffin selected by the family. Items such as letters, photographs or small mementoes can often be included, provided they are suitable for cremation.
If you are unsure about a particular item, our team will advise you.
The Cremation Process
The cremation itself takes place at the chosen crematorium. The coffin is placed into the cremator, and the process is carried out individually — meaning only one person is cremated at a time.
Afterwards, the remains are carefully processed into ashes and placed into either:
- A temporary container
- An urn selected by the family
The ashes can then be collected, scattered, buried, or kept according to your wishes.
